With the CrafterEZ kit and the Birds Coaster Center kit you can build a set of coasters with the center of a bird.

The CrafterEZ kit and the Birds kit share alignment marks so you can perfectly center your design without any measuring!

Select the Materials

For this build Oak was selected as the base material, Cedar for the body, and Red Heart for the wing.

Using the CrafterEZ template draw the shapes of the coaster and the alignment marks on the Base Material, Oak.  Then using the Birds template align the template on the Oak and draw the shape of the body and then the wing.

Using the Birds template draw the outline of the body on the Cedar and the outline of the wing on the Red Heart.   Alignment marks are not relevant for cutting out these inlays.

After selecting and marking the materials, prepare them by affixing them to a backing material.  See the Prepare Materials tutorial for more information.

Cut Out the Inlays

Using the Birds template cut out the inlays using the Cutting Inlays Procedure.

Cut Out the Body Void

Using double sided tape, affix the Birds template, pattern L1, to the base material and cut out the void using the Cutting Voids procedure.

Assemble the Body into the Void

Assemble the Birds body into the void using the Fit portion of the Fit and Finish procedure.

Cut Out the Wing Void

Using double sided tape, affix the Birds template, pattern L2, to the base material and cut out the void using the Cutting Voids procedure.

Assemble the Wing into the Void

Assemble the Birds Wing into the void using the Fit portion of the Fit and Finish procedure.

Cut Out the Coaster Like an Inlay

Using the Alignment Marks, tape the CrafterEZ template into place over each assembled inlay.  Then cut out the coaster using the Cutting Inlays procedure.

Finish the Coaster

Sand and finish the coasters using the Fit and Finish procedures.  We recommend using several coats of some type of poly urethane coating with UV protection on your coasters.  The poly coating will help protect the coasters while the UV protection will help the woods maintain their color.   All woods tend to change color over time, UV protection drastically slows this process down.
