Decorative inlays inlay kits
The CrafterEZ inlay kit Used With the Cupcake Inlay Kit
Cupcake Template: $14.99
With the CrafterEZ kit and the Ice Cream Cone Center kit you can build a coaster with a Ice Cream Cone in the center, or you can create an Ice Cream Cone ornament.
The CrafterEZ and Ice Cream Cone kit share alignment marks so you can perfectly center your design without any measuring!
For this build I decided to build an ornament instead of a coaster. The only difference is if I was building a coaster I'd use the CrafterEZ kit to mark the Base material instead of the Cutout shape on the Ice Cream Cone template.
Yellow Heart was selected as the base material, Brazilian Cherry for the cone, and Maple for the ice cream.
Using the Cutout shape on the Ice Cream Cone template draw the outline of the ice cream cone and the alignment marks on the Yellow Heart Base Material. The picture above was created by aligning the L1 and L2 shapes with the alignment marks and drawing their shapes on the Base Material.
Using the L1 shape on the template draw the outline of the cone on the Brazilian Cherry and using the L2 shape of the template draw the ice cream on the Maple. Alignment marks are not relevant for cutting out these inlays.
After selecting and marking the materials, prepare them by affixing them to a backing material. See the Prepare Materials tutorial for more information.
Using the Ice Cream Cone template cut out the inlays using the Cutting Inlays Procedure.
Align the Ice Cream Cone template, pattern L1, to the Base material using the alignment marks. Using double sided tape, affix the template to the base material and cut out the void using the Cutting Voids procedure.
Assemble the cone body into the void using the Fit portion of the Fit and Finish procedure.
Align the Ice Cream Cone template, pattern L2, to the Base Material using the alignment marks. Using double sided tape, affix the Cupcake template to the base material and cut out the void using the Cutting Voids procedure.
Assemble the Ice Cream into the void using the Fit portion of the Fit and Finish procedure.
Using the alignment marks position the Cutout shape of the Ice Cream Cone template and tape the template into place. Then cut out the ornament using the Cutting Inlays procedure.
Sand and finish the coasters using the Fit and Finish procedures. We recommend using several coats of some type of poly urethane coating with UV protection on your coasters. The poly coating will help protect the coasters while the UV protection will help the woods maintain their color. All woods tend to change color over time, UV protection drastically slows this process down.
